Of course the parking ticket issue has gone mad. Not some summer madness either, but full on year round parking fine madness. Naturally it is all about revenue, which is OK. Tickets are issued more effectively than before, we all got used to a lax system in the past, so it's fair enough that they are tighter and more efficient about it now. The issue is the extortion element of the whole process. When you are bang to rights then it is very annoying, upsetting even, but at least it is a fair, all be it ruthless cop. How about when it is dubious, when actually the ticket is incorrect or unfair? the system is played to rip money from us. Starting with the official fine in the first place, £100 but reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days ... this i object to, they are trying to scare you into paying because if you contest it then your 14 days will run out and you have to pay the full fine. Secondly the appeal process - what about the old Who Watches the Watchers? Why is it that you have to explain yourself to the very people who issued the ticket, this is hardly impartial. Naturally most complaints are rejected. So once your explaination has been rejected you can then appeal to the (same) council in a more formal manner - all the while the fine increasing and thus intimidating people to drop the case and pay up. If that is rejected you can apply to a higher authority - only at this point does a third party become involved. |
